Lubbock Area Komen
Race for the Cure

All for a sister
The story of the Komen Lubbock Area Affiliate is much like that of Susan and Nancy. The dream of an Affiliate for West Texas all started at the 10th Anniversary celebration of the Dallas Affiliate. There, three sisters dedicated themselves to fulfilling the Komen Mission. Emily, Laura and Lee Ann lost their oldest sister, Carolyn, to breast cancer at the age of 35. These sisters decided to turn the bad experience of losing a sister too soon into something good, and from that dedication the Lubbock Area Affiliate was born.

Established in 1995, the Affiliate spreads the life-saving message of early detection and supports breast cancer screening and diagnostic programs in West Texas.

The first annual Lubbock Area Race for the Cure was held in September of 1995. That year, the Race attracted 1300 participants. Recently, the Lubbock Area Affiliate celebrated its twelfth Annual Race with 4264 participants.

Looking to the Future
So what will the next twelve years bring? The Lubbock Area Affiliate strives to make breast health awareness top of mind year round, not just in October. The Affiliate is constantly working to develop new opportunities to spread awareness and the mission of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. From the lady's ProAm golf tournament to the local 4th of July Parade, the Lubbock Area Affiliate is vigorously working to create new programs to better serve its 16 county area and attract new advocates to Komen for the Cure.
