Barb and Herb Killian

Photo of Barb and Herb Killian

Barb and Herb Killian have become lifelong volunteers with the Komen San Diego Affiliate. As the current Volunteer Chairs for the Affiliate they will tell you that they will not stop volunteering until there is a cure for breast cancer.

Their fight is personal. Barb was diagnosed with Stage IIIB Inflammatory Breast Cancer almost five years ago and was not given much hope. Throughout her treatment at The City of Hope, the Killians never met a survivor that had received the same diagnosis. During this time Herb prayed a great deal to be led to someone or something that would give them hope. A month later the couple met a survivor who had been in Barb's shoes and they were also introduced to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The Killians are now avid Komen volunteers and they both firmly believe that you can't be affiliated with Komen for the Cure without having fun. Every year Herb and Barb are out in the community recruiting old and new participants for the Komen San Diego Race for the Cure®. There are a lot of people in the community that still do not know about Komen, and the Killians are going to make sure that the Komen message is spread.

Neither can imagine accomplishing what they do without the other. After 25 years of marriage their support system for one another has no bounds. Until there is a cure for breast cancer, the Killians will continue their volunteering in the hopes that some day other families will no longer have to go through what they experienced.
