Terry Mikeworth
Volunteer extraordinaire Terry Mikeworth has been in involved with the Komen Race for the Cure® for 20 years. In 1985, she participated as a runner in the first Peoria Race for the Cure® - not because of any family history of breast cancer, but simply to support a great cause. She was inspired by the energy of the women participating in the event, and was immediately embraced by the cause.
Terry grew up in Decatur before taking a job in Peoria. After she married and moved back to Decatur in 1989, she hoped to bring the Race for the Cure® with her.
In 1990, her dream began to take shape. She spoke to the Decatur Memorial Hospital Foundation, not realizing that another Peoria Race for the Cure® participant, Cathy Ashby, had presented the idea as well. The DMH Foundation quickly embraced the idea and pledged support. In 1991, Cathy and Terry chaired the first Decatur Race for the Cure®, which drew nearly 1200 participants.
"To see the community come together was incredible," Terry says. That was just the beginning of many years of dedication, work and support yet to come. Since that first Race, Terry has continued to serve on the Decatur Race for the Cure® committee in several capacities, including Race Director, Honorary Chair and Special Events Coordinator. She has also served as head of the Speaker's Bureau. Through this important position, she helped spread the message that "until we find a cure, early detection is the key." It's a very personal message for Terry because in 1997, shortly before her 40th birthday, a routine breast exam revealed a cancerous mass.
After a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, Terry went on to assist other women through the Komen Support Group and the formation of the HERS group (Helping Each other Recover). Her passion for assisting women is amazing, and her positive attitude is of great benefit for others.
Terry is involved in multiple other community activities including her son's school activities, youth hockey, the Decatur Area Arts Council and many other organizations.
